The greater Los Angeles area experiences an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0 per year. Fortunately, earthquakes in this range are typically felt by residents but rarely cause significant damage, as indicated by Michigan Technological University. Tremors with magnitudes between 2.5 and 5.4 are often felt but seldom result in substantial harm, while those below 2.5 are generally not felt by most people.
Shaking from the earthquake was reportedly felt throughout the Southern California region on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damages. Authorities and emergency services are closely monitoring the situation.
This seismic event comes on the heels of a series of strong earthquakes in Japan that resulted in the tragic deaths of two individuals. The earthquakes, one of which was recorded at a magnitude of 7.5, prompted Japan to issue tsunami alerts along its coast. Emergency services were dispatched to rescue people trapped under rubble, with reports of “many” collapsed buildings, according to Yoshimasa Hayashi, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary.
While the tsunami warnings were initially serious, Japan’s weather agency later downgraded them to tsunami advisories. A tsunami warning indicates a potential risk of waves measuring 3 meters or more, while an advisory suggests the possibility of waves reaching heights of up to 1 meter.
