In a significant development on Wednesday, hundreds of pages of previously sealed documents from a lawsuit connected to the accused sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein were made public, shedding light on disturbing allegations involving nearly 200 names, including Epstein’s accusers, prominent businesspeople, and politicians.
While information related to the case has surfaced through various channels, this marks the first time that these documents, officially filed with a court, have been released through the legal system. The transcripts include excerpts from depositions given by Ghislaine Maxwell, Virginia Giuffre, and Johanna Sjoberg.
Notably, Sjoberg’s deposition contains revelations about Prince Andrew’s involvement. She described an incident in which Prince Andrew allegedly touched her breast in a joking manner while taking photos. Sjoberg, who occasionally worked for Epstein, also revealed instances where she felt pressured to go beyond her comfort level in providing sexualized massages.
The unsealed documents also provide insights into a previously settled case between Prince Andrew and Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse. According to a court document filed by Giuffre’s attorneys on Tuesday, an out-of-court settlement had been reached. Prince Andrew vehemently denies these allegations.
References to several prominent figures, including Prince Andrew and former US president Bill Clinton, appear in the deposition transcripts. Sjoberg recalled Epstein telling her that Clinton “likes them young,” insinuating a connection between the two. However, Clinton’s spokesperson reiterated a 2019 denial, clarifying that the former president had no knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities and emphasizing that it has been nearly two decades since they last had contact.
Legal motions filed by attorneys are also part of the newly unsealed records, providing a comprehensive view of the case. This release is the initial set of documents unsealed as part of a December 18 court order, with more expected to follow.
The unsealed documents originate from a case brought by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who claimed Epstein sexually abused her as a minor, with alleged assistance from Ghislaine Maxwell. While many alleged victims and associates have given public interviews and been identified in the media, inclusion in the newly unredacted documents does not imply wrongdoing or lawbreaking.
Due to the sensitive nature of the crimes, some victims’ names remain redacted in the released documents, emphasizing the need for discretion in handling such cases.
Epstein, indicted in 2019 on federal charges of operating a sex trafficking ring, died by suicide in jail while awaiting trial. Maxwell, his former girlfriend, faced sex trafficking charges involving multiple victims and was convicted in 2021.
