Introducing Apple Journal App, a brand-new iPhone app that’s ready for you to use today! It’s designed to help you reflect on life and cultivate gratitude through the art of journaling, a proven way to boost your well-being. With Journal, you can capture and write about your everyday moments and special events, adding photos, videos, audio recordings, locations, and more to create vivid memories.
What’s really cool is that on-device machine learning gives you private, personalized suggestions to spark your journal entries. Plus, customizable notifications make it a breeze to build a journaling habit. And here’s some great news: the Journaling Suggestions API lets other journaling apps suggest moments for you to write about. Both Journal and the Journaling Suggestions API are now available with the iOS 17.2 update.
Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, shared his excitement: “We’re thrilled to bring the benefits of journaling to more people. Journal makes it super easy to preserve your most meaningful memories and practice gratitude. It cleverly curates personal information right from your iPhone. Plus, we’re opening the door for other journaling apps to offer personalized suggestions while keeping your privacy front and center.”
“We’re thrilled to share the excitement of journaling with more individuals,” expressed Bob Borchers, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing. He continued, “Journal simplifies the preservation of cherished memories and fosters gratitude by intelligently organizing personalized information directly from the user’s iPhone. What’s more, we’re enabling other journaling apps to provide similar personalized suggestions while prioritizing user privacy.”
For a while, iPhone users have been relying on various apps, including the Notes app, to document their daily experiences and memories. Now, Apple has introduced a dedicated space specifically designed for this purpose.
Apple’s venture into the journaling space may cause concern among app developers, who frequently accuse Apple of “sherlocking” popular app categories—an expression used to describe the tech giant adopting ideas from the broader app developer and partner community. It’s noteworthy that Apple is currently facing an investigation by the Department of Justice (DoJ) for alleged anticompetitive behavior in the App Store and other business practices.
The Journal app was launched alongside a series of Apple software updates, including a revamped Apple TV app, Siri’s access to Health app data, and support for recording Spatial Video on iPhone 15 Pro.

The updated Apple TV app boasts a new sidebar for easier navigation and now serves as the hub for buying and renting movies, as this functionality is phased out from the iTunes Store app. A new “Home” section showcases users’ subscribed channels and connected apps, along with recommendations, collections, and a personalized “For You” feed.
Your Personal Space, Your Privacy
At the heart of Journal is a commitment to your privacy. When your iPhone is secured with a passcode, all entries in the Journal app are automatically encrypted. For an extra layer of security, you have the option to activate secondary authentication, locking the Journal app with your device passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. Rest assured, every entry you make is end-to-end encrypted when stored in iCloud, ensuring that only you have access. Plus, the clever journaling suggestions are generated right on your device, and you’re in control—choose which suggested moments you want to share with the Journal app and add to your entries.
